Experiencing life as a member of the LGBTQ+ community is difficult – especially for someone who does not have the right support system in their environment. Although we see the community gaining a bigger tolerance, there is still a long way to go before acceptance.

We see representation in the media as well as on several platforms, but it is not enough to end the stigma surrounding the community. Individuals who identify with the LGBTQ+  experience marginalization from whatever society they belong in, no matter how open it is to the idea of gender as a spectrum.

In celebration of pride month this June, let us get to know the transgender community, their endeavors, and aspirations as well as the challenges they face and how treatments from an aesthetic clinic can play an important role in gender dysphoria and in empowering the trans community.

Understanding The Transgender Community

Being transgender means that an individual does not identify with the gender that they are assigned to at birth. This means, their gender identity and expression do not conform to what is commonly expected of them. For better understanding, let us differentiate gender identity and expression.

When you feel as though you were born in the wrong body, or experience an internal sense of being male despite being female and vice-versa, that is gender identity. On the other hand, gender expression is how individuals communicate and display their gender identity through clothing, speech, and interpretation of gender roles.

The ways of how being transgender are represented in pop culture is just a glimpse of what it’s really like to become one. The people’s perception of the trans community is ever-changing. Through the years, the public awareness about the LGBTQ+ and the trans community, in particular, has been gaining traction. People have become more open and accepting of transgender individuals.

Endeavoring Life As A Transgender

The truth is, the LGBTQ+ community still faces discrimination. In fact, 1 in every 4 LGBTQ+ individuals is discriminated against. In addition, a survey on the transgender community reveals that 27 percent of trans people have experienced being fired from work, denied a promotion, or refused to be hired just for being transgender.

Despite these challenges, the community remains steadfast in advocating their rights. At the end of the day, they are humans like everybody else, deserving of respect. Stripping away the physical aspects of what it is to become a person, despite the difference in race, complexion, and sexual identity, we are all human beings.

Just like anybody else, trans people have aspirations – a world of equality and tolerance and social acceptance. They’d like to feel that they are safe within society, their contributions acknowledged, and their rights exercised.

The Role Of Aesthetic Procedures In Trans Empowerment

The ultimate goal of aesthetic procedures is to make individuals comfortable in their own skin. In the transgender community though, it becomes deeper and its reason more profound. Most transgender individuals experience gender dysphoria – that is the feeling of born in the wrong body. Aesthetic procedures are pivotal for these individuals who want to live comfortably in the gender and body they identify with. Apart from hormone therapy,  an aesthetic clinic helps individuals treat their gender dysphoria, which can contribute to their mental wellbeing and in developing self-fulfillment.

These procedures can include breast augmentation, body contouring, jaw slimming, non-surgical bum lift, and dermal fillers. All these can help transgender individuals feel empowered and confident in their bodies. While there are also several surgeries available – some of which are risky such as gender reassignment – non-invasive treatments are an excellent start for those who are new to transitioning and are yet to take the big decision of undergoing major surgeries.

At Medicci Aesthetics, we have worked with hundreds of clients from the LGBTQ+ community, and we are always available as their allies to help them feel confident, acknowledged, and empowered. Happy pride month!
