An abdominoplasty, popularly known as a tummy tuck, is a cosmetic surgical procedure to flatten the tummy by removing extra fat and skin. This is performed to tighten the abdominal area walls and enhance the area around the belly button. This surgical procedure is an ideal option if you have excess fat or skin around the area of the belly button or if you have a weak abdominal wall.

While abdominoplasty is an effective treatment to remove excess fat, it may not be an ideal option for all candidates. People with excess fat, or poor skin elasticity, or weakened connective tissue in the abdomen can go for this treatment. These conditions are typically caused by drastic changes in weight, pregnancy, or even aging.

A tummy tuck is also effective in removing stretch marks and excess skin in the lower abdomen. However, the tummy tuck will not correct any stretch marks outside this area.

During the consultation with our cosmetic surgeon, you can discuss a suitable candidate for a tummy tuck. Most patients who have severe chronic diseases or have had previous abdominal surgeries may not be eligible for this procedure.

The systematic process for a tummy tuck includes:

  • Our cosmetic surgeon will firstly make two incisions. The first one will be from the hip bone on one side to the hip bone on the other side. The second incision is made around the navel area.
  • If it is a partial tummy tuck, we will make one or two smaller incisions.
  • Once the incisions are made, the skin is separated from the abdominal muscles and the excess fat is removed from the abdominal area.
  • After separation, the abdominal muscles are pulled together and stitched into place. After this, the excess skin is removed for a tight, compact appearance.
  • If the navel area is included, we will reconstruct it to look natural and seamless.
  • In some cases, a surgical drain is inserted under the skin to collect the excess fluid, and this will be left in place for a few weeks before it is removed.
  • In the end, the incisions are closed with sutures, and a sterile dressing is applied over the area.

Post-Surgery Aftercare

After surgery, the anesthesia is removed, and the tube that was helping breathe is also removed. We will then move you to the post-operative area to monitor your vital signs, and in several hours, you will be able to leave our Aesthetic Clinic.

The recovery period for a tummy tuck can be between two weeks to two months. However, if you have a large wound or a significant amount of skin or fat removed, the recovery may take longer.

 The post-surgery aftercare  includes:

  • Make sure you take all the prescribed medication as directed.
  • Consult with our surgeon before engaging in any strenuous activity and before you lift heavy items.
  • You have to wear a support garment after the surgery to support your abdomen while it is healing.
  • Care for your wound as instructed by the surgeon.
  • Do not smoke after treatment.

A tummy tuck can be the ultimate change to help you live a healthier and positive life. Contact us at Medicci Aesthetics for an initial consultation and to check your eligibility for this procedure.
