Being obese can be challenging for many people. There can be significant effects on a person’s health, lifestyle, and self-esteem. However, losing weight can be a difficult process that takes much time, and sometimes a person may not lose fat in certain areas of the body. Therefore many opt for liposuction or mega liposuction procedures. In this blog, we will examine the latter.

What is mega liposuction?

It is a procedure that aims to reduce fat in a person’s body. It is commonly used in areas that one finds difficult to change through diet and exercise, such as the abdominal region. It involves removing numerous fat cells from sites in a person’s body to give them a slimmer appearance. Unlike regular liposuction, this surgery removes more than five liters of fat in one procedure.

Due to the significant amount removed, a person will have a considerable difference in their body fluid balance. Thus, the procedure will need to be carried out in a hospital, and the client will need to be admitted for one or two days so they can receive special aftercare.

What is the procedure?

Highly trained specialists in hospitals or aesthetic clinics will use a technique called tumescent liposuction. It is safer, more effective, and less painful than traditional liposuction. In this method, the surgeon will administer an injection containing local anesthetics and epinephrine to the target areas.

The fluid fills the fat layer in the skin, causing it to swell and become firm, giving the specialist more control when contouring the region. The injected liquid also temporarily shrinks the blood vessels, decreasing blood loss and reducing other symptoms such as swelling, bruising, and pain once the procedure is completed.

After the client is injected with the solution, the surgeon will make a small incision in their skin. Then into the fat layer, they will insert a cannula—a small thin tube connected to a machine similar to a vacuum. The fat will then be extracted and sent into a sterile collection system.

How is the post-operative process?

Due to the length of the procedure and the amount of fat removed, clients will need special care and will take longer to recover. Surgeons would recommend patients wear an elastic compression garment for around four to six weeks to ensure that the skin can contract and heal effectively. It is usually made of lycra and is strong and resilient. It is not protruding, so it can be hidden under clothing with ease. Medication will also be given to prevent inflammation and infection.

Clients feel some discomfort, tenderness, and bruising after the procedure; however, this will gradually reduce. As mega liposuction typically creates excess lymphatic fluid, which causes swelling and slight pain, specialists may recommend manual lymphatic drainage. It is a massage that enables the liquid to drain and has been proven to work effectively.

Mega liposuction can provide relief to many people who are having difficulty with reducing weight in an area. If you are considering this procedure, you can contact us at Medicci Aesthetics for more information.
