Facial feminization surgery is more than a cosmetic procedure; to many transgender people, it is crucial to becoming comfortable with their appearance and feels self-confident. In this blog, we will take a detailed look at this procedure so that if one wishes to undergo it, they can do so with ample information.

What is facial feminization surgery?

It is a surgical procedure that aims to change a person’s facial features and make them softer and more feminine in appearance. It is commonly sought by transgender women who at birth are assigned male and non-binary transgender people.

The surgery is tailor-made for a person; therefore, any facial aspect can be changed according to their wish. The surgery primarily focuses on the structure of facial bones and the shape of the nose; however, facelifts can also be included if needed.

At present, most medical insurance policies do not cover this surgery. However, this is changing as most medical clinics are starting to recognize how crucial this procedure is for the wellbeing of many transgender people.

What is the process?

Before the surgery, a person will meet their facial feminization surgeon. They should preferably be experienced in the procedure and have board certification. They will listen to a person’s ideas for how their face should look and recommend the best methods to gain good results. The best specialist will also be able to picture what is being described and suggest any changes that could enhance the client’s idea and lead to a better finish.

Before the surgery, a person will need to do a CT scan so that the surgeon can find out about the patient’s anatomical structure. They will check if a person meets the necessary criteria for the procedure and provide guidelines on preparing for it. A specialist can refuse to carry this treatment out if a person has medical conditions that might affect it or cannot give full consent with a sound mind.

In case there are no concerns, the specialist will go ahead with the surgery. The procedure can contain one or more of the following changes.

Forehead contouring – It is done to make the ridge above the eye sockets less pronounced while outlining the forehead higher and smoother. Some surgeons may also shape the area to give it a rounded appearance.

Eye and lid modification – To give the eye a wider, larger, and more doe-like appearance, any excess tissue will be removed, and then fold in the inner corner of the eye may also be eliminated.

Cheek augmentation – As women have rounder and more prominent cheeks, implants may be placed. Some surgeons may move the bones into different positions or use fat from another part of the body to achieve the same effect.

Nose reshaping – It is done to reduce the size of the name and change the angles.

Lip augmentation – Fuller lips are considered very feminine, so it is typical for implants or fillers to be used to give the lip more volume.

Mandibular angle reduction – As female jaws are smaller and sharper than males, this procedure would reduce the jaw and sculpt it to make it narrow.

Why is it done?

A person’s facial features are different based on the sex they are born with at birth. Males characteristically have harder and more defined features, while females tend to have softer ones. Unlike other parts of the body that can easily be hidden under clothing, the face is more prominent and is visible to others.

For many transgender people whose gender identity is different from what they are born with, altering their facial features is crucial in their transition process. It allows them to be recognized more as the gender they identify with and help avoid discrimination and harassment.

However, as crucial as it may be to some people, it is not the case with all transgender women. Some may not choose to do the procedure, and that is perfectly all right. Everyone’s experience is different, and their needs need to be respected. But, if you wish to carry out this procedure, make sure to visit an aesthetics clinic and consult a reputed surgeon.
