Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to increase breast size and enhance breast shape using implants or fat transfer.

Description
Breast Augmentation
Women often desire aesthetically pleasing breasts. The most common concerns among women are deformities and sagging caused by postpartum weight loss or breast reduction, as well as unilateral or bilateral underdevelopment of the breasts. In such cases, breast augmentation surgery can provide larger, fuller, and more aesthetically pleasing breasts.
For breast augmentation surgeries, different and personalized implants are used, and in some cases, they can be combined with breast lift procedures to achieve better results. Women seeking breast augmentation often try to express their desired size by referring to bra sizes (e.g., 85, 90). However, it should be noted that bra sizes may vary depending on the brand.
Additionally, measurements such as 85 and 90 refer to the circumference of the rib cage. Breast size is usually determined not only by the band size but also by…
Techniques
Implant Placement in Breast Augmentation
Together with the patient, the surgeon decides on the most appropriate incision site for implant placement. The surgeon can insert the implant through three possible locations: under the armpit, along the crease where the breast meets the rib cage (hidden within the bikini line), or at the level of the darker skin around the nipple (areola).
The goal is to minimize the visibility of any resulting scar. After the breast tissue and skin are separated from the incision area, the implant is placed either under the breast tissue or beneath the chest wall muscle, depending on the surgeon’s recommendation. Symmetry between the two breasts is ensured.
Finally, the incisions are closed and covered with sutures and bandages.
Before Surgery
What Should Be Done Before Breast Augmentation Surgery?
If the patient is taking blood thinners, the surgeon may request that they be discontinued 10 days prior to surgery. It is also important to avoid any infections elsewhere in the body before the procedure. For women over the age of 40—especially those with a family history of breast cancer—a mammogram is recommended before breast augmentation surgery.
Is Anesthesia Used for Breast Augmentation Surgery?
Unless the patient prefers otherwise, the procedure is performed under local anesthesia with mild sedation. The patient will not remember the procedure and will not feel any pain with any type of anesthesia.

Is Hospitalization Required After Breast Augmentation?
Patients may choose to stay overnight if they prefer; however, hospitalization is generally not necessary.
When Can Patients Return to Normal Life After Breast Augmentation?
If possible, patients are advised to take 4–5 days off. A few days after the procedure, some tasks may be performed while sitting or standing.
Will There Be Any Scars After Breast Augmentation?
After surgery, small firm pink scars may remain where the incisions were made. Over the following weeks, the pinkness gradually fades, and the skin softens. Once healing is complete, the scars become very faint.
Will There Be Numbness in the Breasts After Surgery?
Some numbness in the breast area may occur after surgery. Excess sensitivity or numbness may also be experienced in the nipples. Limited numbness at the incision sites is possible; however, these symptoms typically improve over time.
Is It Necessary to Remove or Replace the Implants?
In the past, implants had to be replaced after a certain period. Today, implants are provided to patients with a manufacturer’s warranty certificate. Unless complications occur, they can be used for a lifetime.
