Description

Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is the process of removing excess fat, tissue, and skin from the breasts to reduce their size. The procedure aims to decrease overly large breasts to a more proportionate size, reshape them in harmony with the rest of the body, and eliminate any associated physical discomfort.

This surgery offers the benefit of relieving the physical and emotional burden of excessively large breasts while improving body proportions and enhancing self-confidence.

When Should Breast Reduction Surgery Be Considered?

-
If your breasts are disproportionately large compared to your body structure

- If your breasts cause back, shoulder, or neck pain and skin irritation

- If you experience difficulty breathing

- If you struggle to find clothing or bras that fit your body properly

- If one breast is significantly larger than the other

- If you are dissatisfied with the size and appearance of your breasts

If you experience one or more of the above issues, are in good overall health, have realistic expectations, and feel prepared with a positive outlook, you may be an excellent candidate for this procedure.

Techniques

Breast Reduction Surgery Procedure

Breast reduction surgery typically lasts between three to five hours and is performed in a hospital or surgical center under general anesthesia. The procedure involves removing excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, repositioning the nipple and areola to their proper anatomical positions, and reducing the areola size if deformities are present.

Before surgery, the surgeon makes measurements and marks the breasts to determine the incision sites, as the shape of the breast changes when the patient is lying on the operating table.

There are four different incision techniques, chosen depending on breast size, the degree of sagging, and the position of the nipple–areola complex:

- Circular Incision (Periareolar Incision): An incision made only around the edges of the areola.

- Vertical Incision (Lollipop Incision): An incision around the areola and vertically down from the nipple to the breast crease.

- Inverted-T Incision (Anchor Incision): An incision around the areola, down from the nipple to the breast crease, and along the natural breast fold.

-Horizontal Incision: An incision made around the areola and along the breast crease.

During the surgery, drains are placed near the nipples to collect excess fluid. At the end of the procedure, the incisions are sutured, beginning from the deeper tissue layers and finishing with the outermost skin layer.

After Surgery

After Breast Reduction Surgery

-
To ensure a healthy recovery, it is very important to follow all of your surgeon’s instructions (e.g., wearing a special bra after surgery, incision care, using prescribed medications/creams, etc.).

- Unless medically necessary, the hospital stay is limited to 1 day.

- After discharge, you will have postoperative check-ups on the dates scheduled by your surgeon.

- Returning to your daily routine may take a few days; however, if you are working, it is recommended to take one week off. If your job involves physical activity, especially tasks that strain your arms, you may need two weeks off.

- For a few days, you may feel tightness and mild pain around the incision site. This can be relieved with painkillers and usually lasts only two to three days.

- Because you may feel tired and sensitive after your surgery, it is advisable to have someone accompany you for the first few days.

- Do not drive for the first 10 days.

- For one month after surgery, avoid heavy exercise and lifting heavy objects, including babies or children.

- Smoking reduces circulation, delays wound healing, and significantly increases the risk of serious complications. Therefore, you should stop smoking at least four weeks before and four weeks after your surgery.

- It is possible to experience emotional reactions such as post-surgery depression. This is considered a normal and possible occurrence.
