Otoplasty (Ear Reshaping Surgery)

Description
Prominent Ear Deformity and Otoplasty
A normal ear pinna forms an angle of less than 25 degrees with the side of the head, with an average distance of about 2 cm. These are approximate values, and when they are exceeded, the ears appear more prominent. To correct prominent ears, the underlying anatomical cause must be analyzed. Prominent ears may result from one or a combination of three different factors:
1. Underdeveloped antihelix – insufficient fold formation in the upper part of the ear
2. Prominent concha – excessive depth or projection of the central part of the ear
3. Prominent earlobe
The most common ear deformity is prominent ear deformity, which can be corrected with otoplasty. Otoplasty not only addresses the prominence of the ear pinna but can also correct ear size, earlobe deformities, and other irregularities. Beyond aesthetics, the ear pinna also plays a role in hearing by acting like a funnel that collects sound waves and directs them into the middle ear.
There are no strict rules for otoplasty. Surgery is not recommended for children under the age of five. Most of our patients are adults. In adults, the procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia without the need for general anesthesia. Thanks to advanced surgical techniques, prominent ears can be corrected in about 45 minutes, and patients are usually discharged the same day without hospitalization.
Techniques
Surgery can be performed using several different techniques. The most popular methods are the suture technique and the cartilage weakening technique. Both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages. In the cartilage weakening technique, the cartilage can be reshaped without the need for permanent sutures.
Whether correcting a protrusion or enhancing symmetry, every aspect of the procedure is customized to achieve natural-looking results in perfect harmony with your facial aesthetics.
Before Surgery
Before embarking on the transformative journey of otoplasty, a comprehensive consultation serves as the foundation for clear communication between you and our experienced specialists.
During these pre-surgery sessions, we take the time to understand your goals, carefully evaluate the anatomy of your ears, and collaboratively design a personalized plan tailored to your desired outcomes.
This thoughtful approach is essential to ensure that every aspect of the procedure is meticulously planned and executed, delivering results that meet your expectations and enhance your overall satisfaction.
Surgery
Otoplasty involves precise adjustments to the structure of the ears. Surgeons skillfully reshape the cartilage and expertly reposition the ears to achieve a balanced and aesthetically pleasing result.
This procedure is performed with meticulous precision to ensure the ears appear natural and harmonize seamlessly with your facial features.
After Surgery
For the first 40 days, techniques such as wrapping with tennis bands can help correct the shape of the ears in infants. The effects vary from patient to patient.
For postoperative care, a compression bandage is applied for a few days. The ears are supported with a compression bandage for up to six weeks after surgery.
The most common complication is bleeding, which usually resolves on its own. In some cases, additional interventions such as draining the bleeding may be required.
