The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia; however, when only a small amount of fat is being transferred, it can also be carried out under local anesthesia. During the surgery, your surgeon uses liposuction to remove unwanted fat from areas such as the flanks, abdomen, waist, back, or thighs. Liposuction involves making small incisions in the skin and inserting a thin tube (cannula) to gently extract excess fat.

The harvested fat is then purified and prepared for reinjection. Your surgeon carefully injects this treated fat into specific areas of the buttocks, strategically sculpting them to create a rounder, fuller, and more contoured shape.

For the fat transfer, three to five small incisions are made around the buttocks. Both the liposuction and fat transfer incisions are closed with sutures. Finally, a compression garment is applied to the treated areas of the body to help minimize bleeding, reduce swelling, and support optimal healing.

How Long Do the Results Last?

With proper technique, results can last for many years. Since fat transfer is semi-permanent by nature, part of the injected fat is reabsorbed by the body, while the remaining fat establishes a permanent outcome. However, it’s important to note that your buttocks may still change over time due to aging or lifestyle factors such as diet and weight fluctuations.

Key Aftercare Guidelines:

- Strictly follow all post-surgical instructions provided by your surgeon (including compression garments, drainage care, incision care, and prescribed medications/creams).

- Hospital stay is generally not required beyond 1 day, unless medically necessary.

- Attend all follow-up appointments; drains will be removed during these visits or postponed until your surgeon decides it is safe.

- Avoid sitting directly on your buttocks for the first two weeks. Sleep on your side or stomach until the area has fully healed.

- Most patients can return to light daily routines within a week.

- Temporary side effects may include tightness, bruising, swelling, and discomfort.

- A support person is recommended during the first few days of recovery.

- Avoid driving for the first 10 days post-surgery.

- Swelling may persist for up to six months or longer, meaning the final results can only be evaluated after 6–12 months.

- Avoid heavy lifting, intense workouts, or carrying children for at least three weeks after surgery.

- Do not smoke for at least four weeks before and after the procedure, as it compromises circulation, delays healing, and increases the risk of serious complications.
